Individualism in "Anthem" by Ayn Rand Essay

Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is a very unique novel. It encircles individualism and makes the reader think of how people can conform to society and do as they are told without knowing the consequences and results of their decisions. Also, it teaches the importance of self expression and the freedom that comes along with being your own person and having the power to choose what path to take in life. Figurative language is used often in this book and in a variety of quotes that have great importance to the theme, plot, and conflict of the novel. “We blew out the candle….” The first thing that is apparent about this quote is the use of we. The use of fireflies in this quote is symbolic for some chance that the main character sees. In this situation he feels that International 4-8818 is different than everyone else and has the potential to think the same way as himself, which is different than their society wants them to think and forbids them to think. This quote also characterizes 8818 as being strong and tall and different from everyone else. This means that he has some amount of individualism. This relates to the theme and conflict of the novel, despite the efforts of the councils, some people still manage to be different. This is also when the main character starts noticing the few people like him. The people that think the same way that he does, that there is something more out there. It is people like this that come into play later in the novel when the character says to Gaea that he is going to bring people back, to save them and start a new society. International 4-8818 would be one of the first that he would bring back. “(Liberty’s) body was straight and thin as a blade of iron..” This quote characterizes the Golden One, or Gaea as she becomes later in the novel. This is another example of Rand using the golden symbolism. The main character sees something different in her and is drawn to her. Describing her as a blade of iron could mean that she is a strong person and it foreshadows her being strong willed and not afraid to go against her society and
